School Supplies SG

Primary 1

What to buy before P1 orientation day.

The uniform itself is sold by the school's appointed supplier on orientation day. These are the bits you sort separately — most parents underestimate the name-label situation.

Before you start planning

  • Don't buy uniform from anywhere except the school supplier. Schools usually set up at the canteen on orientation day. Bring cash and the official supplier list from your school.
  • Buy shoes 1 size up. P1s grow fast, white shoes scuff fast — better to have growth room than buy twice in a term.
  • Name-label everything. Sounds excessive until week 2 when 6 identical water bottles sit in lost property.

Before you shop

What P1 prep is actually like

The school's appointed uniform supplier sets up at the canteen on orientation day. They handle uniform sizing. Your job: shoes, socks, bag, water bottle, and the surprisingly important name-label situation.

Orientation day rhythm

  • School-issued: uniform top (with school logo), bottom, PE attire.
  • Set up at the canteen by the official supplier — bring cash.
  • Sizing happens on the spot — kids try on; you take home or come back to collect.

School supplies (not parents)

  • Uniform top with school crest.
  • Uniform bottom (skirt / shorts / trousers).
  • PE T-shirt with school logo.

What parents buy

  • White school shoes (most primary schools — plain white, lace-up or velcro).
  • White ankle socks (6 pairs minimum — laundry rotation reality).
  • Ergonomic school bag (Impact / Beckmann / generic ~18L).
  • Water bottle (500-700ml), name-labelled.
  • Iron-on or stick-on name labels (200+ pieces).
  • Compartment lunch/snack box.
  • P1 stationery starter set (2B pencils, eraser, sharpener, ruler, colour pencils).

Watch-outs

  • Don't buy uniform from anywhere except the school's official supplier — it'll differ in shade or stitching.
  • Buy shoes 0.5-1 size up. P1s grow fast; white shoes scuff fast.
  • Most schools allow only plain white shoes (no coloured logos / trims). A handful of schools require canvas only — check before buying leather.

Frequently asked

  • Can I buy uniform online or from Bata?
Uniform tops and bottoms: no — must come from the school supplier (logo, fabric, shade are matched). White school shoes and socks: yes, any retailer.
  • Are smart watches allowed for P1?
Most primary schools ban smart watches and fitness trackers. Plain analog or basic digital is the safe choice if a watch is needed.
  • What's the actual rule on hair?
Most primary schools require shoulder-length-or-longer hair to be tied back with plain dark hair ties. No bright clips, glitter, or stickers.
  • When does the school tell us the supplier list?
Usually 4-6 weeks before P1 starts. Sometimes via the registration confirmation, sometimes only at orientation. Don't pre-buy bulk uniform until you have the list.
