P1 Stationery Starter Set

MOE schools don't issue stationery — you bring it on day 1. This is the no-fluff list of what gets used (and what stays in the pencil case forever).

Before you shop

What P1 stationery is actually for

MOE schools don't issue stationery — you bring it on day 1. Here's what gets used vs what sits in the pencil case all year. Quantities are based on real P1 wear-and-tear.

Used daily

  • 2B pencils — written work, copy book, math drills. Sharpen all 12 the night before; kids can't sharpen in class.
  • Eraser — go through 2-3 per term.
  • 30cm ruler — used in math and copy work.
  • Coloured pencils — art class + diagram colouring.

Used weekly

  • Glue stick — paste worksheets into exercise books (P1-P3 standard practice).
  • Safety scissors — craft activities.
  • Highlighter (light colour like yellow) — teacher-led marking.

Schools usually supply

  • Exercise books with the school crest — sold via the bookshop in week 1.
  • Sometimes: PE T-shirt, art smock, additional workbooks.

Watch-outs

  • Markers / felt-tip pens are usually NOT allowed in P1 — bleed-through ruins worksheets.
  • Hard plastic pencil cases are LOUD when dropped — most teachers prefer fabric.
  • Skip retractable / clicky-mechanism pencils for P1 — leads break constantly.

Frequently asked

  • Does the school provide ANY stationery?
Most MOE primary schools provide only exercise books and a few specific workbooks. Everyday stationery (pencils, eraser, ruler, glue, scissors) is on the parent.
  • Are colour pens / markers needed?
Not for P1. Most teachers ban markers due to bleed-through. Coloured pencils only.
  • How many pencils should we send daily?
5-6 sharpened pencils in the pencil case is the safe number. Pencils get lost, broken, lent.
  • Is name-labelling really necessary?
Yes. By week 2, 6 identical erasers will sit in lost property. Iron-on labels save you the year.
