National Day

What to expect on National Day

9 August. Schools mark Singapore's National Day in the week leading up to the public holiday — most run a half-day celebration with a sing-along and red-and-white dress code.

The day itself

  • Schools commemorate National Day in the school week before 9 August (the public holiday itself).
  • Programme typically includes National Anthem, Pledge, a teacher's address, and class sing-along of NDP theme songs.
  • Some schools also run cohort photos, mass dance, or food stalls.

Dress code

  • Red top + white bottom, or white top + red bottom, is the default.
  • Some schools allow Singapore-flag T-shirts (often from previous NDP funpacks).
  • PE attire is the fallback if PE class is scheduled.

What parents buy

  • One plain red T-shirt + one plain white T-shirt (re-usable across years).
  • Optional: Singapore-flag headband, mini hand-held flag, face tattoos.
  • Re-use any item from previous NDP funpacks before buying new — most kids already have a flag tee.

Watch-outs

  • Some schools rotate the colour combo each year (red top one year, white top the next). Wait for the class note.
  • Most school dress codes still require plain T-shirts (no slogan tees) under their celebration top.

  • Do students need to wear costumes?
    No, just red and white. Costumes are not part of the National Day observance in schools.
  • What if my child wants to bring a Singapore flag?
    Most schools allow small hand-held flags. Large flags can block other students' views — check the school memo.
  • Are NDP funpack items expected on the day?
    No. The funpack is for actual NDP attendees at the National Stadium / Padang. Schools run their own dress code.
