What Taekwondo CCA is like in school

Taekwondo follows the WT (World Taekwondo) format in most Singapore schools. Belt grading every few months. Dobok bought from the school's affiliated training partner.

Training rhythm

  • 2-3 sessions per week, 2 hours each — usually after school in the school hall or field.
  • Competes in the National School Games (NSG) — Jan to Sep season, with C / B / A Division play.
  • Peak intensity during NSG season; off-season is technical / conditioning work for taekwondo.

The school / unit provides

  • Training space + mats.
  • Coaching (often via affiliated school chain).
  • Grading administration.

What parents buy

  • Dobok (white uniform) — from the school's approved supplier.
  • Mouthguard.
  • Shin guards + instep guards (for sparring).
  • Grading belt (at each grading promotion).

Watch-outs

  • Dobok must match school's approved style — don't buy generic taekwondo dobok online.
  • Sparring gear required for sparring sessions, even just intra-school. Mouthguard sized properly.

Frequently asked

  • How long to black belt?
Typically 4-6 years of consistent training. Schools follow the WT grading system: 10 colour belts to 1st-dan black.
  • Is sparring compulsory?
Most school CCAs include it. Optional opt-out for medical / safety reasons.
  • Does it count for LEAPS / CCA?
Yes — Sports CCA, scored under LEAPS 2.0.
