What Table Tennis CCA is like in school

Table Tennis competes in NSG. Equipment-light: bats are loaned for the first 6 months, indoor shoes are the main parental investment.

Training rhythm

  • 2-3 sessions per week, 2 hours each — usually after school in the school hall or field.
  • Competes in the National School Games (NSG) — Jan to Sep season, with C / B / A Division play.
  • Peak intensity during NSG season; off-season is technical / conditioning work for table tennis.

The school provides

  • Tables, nets, training balls.
  • Loan bats for first 6 months.
  • Coaching.

What parents buy

  • Indoor non-marking shoes (court shoes work; specialised TT shoes optional).
  • Personal bat from Sec 2 (Butterfly or Stiga).
  • Microfibre sweat towel + sweatband.
  • Water bottle.

Watch-outs

  • Don't buy a pre-made S$30 bat for serious play — the rubber matters more than the blade.
  • Bat care — don't store in a cold or wet bag; rubber degrades.

Frequently asked

  • Which grip should we start with?
Shakehand grip is the default for most school coaches. Penhold is a stylistic choice; coach will advise.
  • Is it a team sport at NSG?
Yes — singles, doubles, team events all run.
  • How often to restring rubber?
Every 6-12 months depending on use. Coach will check at the start of each season.
