What Swimming CCA is like in school

Swimming competes in the NSG (Junior Division for primary, C/B/A for secondary/JC). Training at the school pool or a designated public pool. All training kit is on the parent.

Training rhythm

  • 2-3 sessions per week, 2 hours each — usually after school in the school hall or field.
  • Competes in the National School Games (NSG) — Jan to Sep season, with C / B / A Division play.
  • Peak intensity during NSG season; off-season is technical / conditioning work for swimming.

The school provides

  • Pool access (own or hired).
  • Kickboards and pull buoys (usually).
  • Coaching.

What parents buy

  • Training swimsuit × 2 (rotation reality).
  • Goggles (Speedo Vanquisher is the standard).
  • Silicone swim cap.
  • Microfibre swim towel.
  • Pool flip-flops for between sessions.

Watch-outs

  • Chlorine destroys cheap swimsuits — pay a bit more for chlorine-resistant material.
  • Rinse goggles in fresh water after each use; pool chemicals fog the anti-fog coating fast.

Frequently asked

  • Need to know all four strokes?
By NSG competition level, yes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly). Beginners learn over time.
  • Is gala the main event?
Yes — NSG swimming galas are the season highlight. Heat and final structure like adult meets.
  • Can my child swim if asthmatic?
Many swimmers manage asthma well — chlorine can be an irritant but cold/dry air is worse. Confirm with paediatrician.
