What Red Cross Youth is like in school

Red Cross Youth (RCY) is Singapore Red Cross's school programme. Three tiers: Red Cross Links (primary), Red Cross Cadets (secondary), Red Cross Chapter (tertiary). First-aid heavy, service-oriented.

Training rhythm

  • Weekly meeting at school — typically 2-3 hours after curriculum.
  • Skills focus: first aid, CPR/AED, casualty handling, basic rescue.
  • Annual National First Aid Competition + service learning duties at school events.

The school / RCY provides

  • Training curriculum (Singapore Red Cross Academy materials).
  • Practice manikins, first-aid demo kits.
  • Uniform tunic for parade days (issued, supplemented by parents).

What parents buy

  • Wool beret in the unit's specified colour (most secondaries: dark red / navy).
  • White crew socks (6-pack — laundry rotation).
  • Personal first-aid practice kit (bandages, gauze, tape).
  • ID lanyard (optional, some schools issue).

Watch-outs

  • Confirm the beret colour with the school before buying — they're not interchangeable across schools.
  • Sock length matters: must be crew (not ankle, not knee). Mid-calf is the rule.
  • Practice kit is for home study only — the school provides equipment for formal training.

Frequently asked

  • Does RCY count for LEAPS / CCA?
Yes. RCY is a Uniformed Group under LEAPS 2.0 and scores the same way as NCC, Scouts and Brigades.
  • What's the National First Aid Competition?
Annual inter-school competition where RCY units test first-aid, CPR, casualty handling, and team coordination. Strong showings count toward CCA achievement points.
  • Can my child join service activities beyond school?
Yes — Singapore Red Cross runs community service opportunities outside school (e.g. blood donation drives) that RCY members can volunteer at.
  • Does my child need to know first aid before joining?
No prior knowledge required. The first-aid curriculum starts from basics.
