Before you shop

What NCC is like in school

The National Cadet Corps is Singapore's oldest uniformed youth organisation — 145 units, over 11,000 members across Land, Sea and Air formations. Discipline-heavy. Run by MOE in partnership with MINDEF.

Training rhythm

  • Weekly training session in school — typically 2-3 hours after school on a fixed day.
  • Additional cohort camps and parades through the year (number varies by unit).
  • Annual Total Defence Badge programme and freestyle / precision drill competitions.

The school / NCC provides

  • Cadet uniform (pixelised No. 4 working dress) — issued, not bought.
  • Field training equipment for camp activities.
  • All training and instructors.

What parents buy

  • Parade boots (black leather, ankle-high, polish-able).
  • Polish kit (Kiwi gloss + brush + cloth) — weekly use.
  • Brass polish (Brasso) for buckles and rank insignia.
  • 2x dri-fit PT T-shirts.
  • Drawstring bag for the polish kit (keeps stains out of the school bag).
  • Name-tag holder (optional, some schools issue).

Watch-outs

  • First inspection comes in week 1-2 — buy the polish kit immediately, not later.
  • Smart watches are banned during training and parade — analog only.
  • Damaging or losing issued uniform incurs a replacement fee — keep it secured.

Frequently asked

  • What's the difference between Land, Sea and Air?
    Different parent units within NCC. Land = standard infantry training. Sea = boat handling, seamanship. Air = aviation theory, model aircraft. Your child's school is affiliated to one of these — check with the teacher-in-charge.
  • Does NCC count towards LEAPS / CCA points?
    Yes. NCC is a tier-1 Uniformed Group CCA, scoring under LEAPS 2.0 like any other CCA. Strong attendance + leadership roles earn bonus points for JC/Poly/ITE admission.
  • Is there a yearly camp?
    Yes. Most NCC units run an annual unit camp plus opportunities to join NCC HQ exercises (e.g. Exercise Panzer Strike).
  • Can my child quit NCC if it doesn't fit?
    Switching CCAs is school-discretion and typically only allowed at the end of Sec 1 or 2.
