What Hockey CCA is like in school

Hockey is played on artificial turf in the NSG. Sticks are loaned for new players; senior players invest in their own. Shin guards + mouthguard required.

Training rhythm

  • 2-3 sessions per week, 2 hours each — usually after school in the school hall or field.
  • Competes in the National School Games (NSG) — Jan to Sep season, with C / B / A Division play.
  • Peak intensity during NSG season; off-season is technical / conditioning work for hockey.

The school provides

  • Game jersey + shorts.
  • Loan sticks for new players.
  • Turf access for training.

What parents buy

  • Mouthguard (Shock Doctor or similar).
  • Shin guards (hockey-specific).
  • Turf shoes (non-marking sole).
  • Own stick (Sec 2 onwards — composite for budget; carbon for serious players).

Watch-outs

  • Turf shoes only — football boots damage artificial turf and slip on it.
  • Don't buy a senior-grade stick at Sec 1; sticks are sized to height and skill — coach guides.

Frequently asked

  • Is hockey contact?
Limited contact — body contact is a foul. The risk is from the stick and hard ball; protective gear is non-optional.
  • NSG divisions?
    C / B / A Divisions for secondary and JC.
  • Indoor hockey too?
Some schools offer indoor hockey too — different stick, smaller goal. Confirm with the teacher-in-charge.
