Dragon Boat

Dragon boat is mostly a JC / tertiary sport in Singapore, with some secondary schools having teams. Training at water venues (Bedok Reservoir, Marina Reservoir). Paddles and boats provided; you bring quick-dry kit, PFD if not loaned.

What Dragon Boat CCA is like in school

Dragon Boat is more common as a JC / tertiary CCA in Singapore, with a few secondary schools running teams. Training at Bedok Reservoir, Marina Reservoir or similar water venues.

Training rhythm

  • 2-3 sessions per week, 2 hours each — usually after school in the school hall or field.
  • Competes in the National School Games (NSG) — Jan to Sep season, with C / B / A Division play.
  • Peak intensity during NSG season; off-season is technical / conditioning work for dragon boat.

The unit provides

  • Boats and paddles.
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) on most teams.
  • Coaching.

What parents buy

  • Quick-dry T-shirts × 2 (NOT cotton).
  • Quick-dry shorts.
  • Half-finger paddle gloves.
  • Sport sunblock SPF 50+ + cap.
  • 1L insulated water bottle.

Watch-outs

  • Sunblock is non-negotiable — open water + Singapore sun = burn in 30 minutes.
  • Cotton stays wet for hours after a wet session — skip it.
  • Most teams require basic swimming proficiency — confirm with the captain.

    Yes — most teams require basic swimming. Safety boats accompany training but proficiency is expected.
  • Are competitions race-distance based?
    Yes — 200m, 500m, 1000m are standard distances. Schools typically race 200m and 500m.
  • What's a 'paddler' vs 'helm'?
    Paddlers stroke; helm steers from the back; drummer keeps rhythm at the front. Coach assigns based on body type and skill.
