What Chess Club is like in school

Activity rhythm

  • 1-2 weekly sessions, 2 hours each.
  • Tournament play 2-3 times a year.
  • Optional rated play via Singapore Chess Federation.

The school provides

  • Tournament-standard chess sets (Staunton design).
  • Coaching (school teacher or external coach).
  • Tournament registration.

What parents buy

  • Magnetic travel chess set (for practice between sessions).
  • Digital chess clock (DGT 1000 series for tournaments).
  • Tournament scoresheet booklet.
  • Tactics book (coach-recommended).

Watch-outs

  • Online chess (chess.com, lichess.org) is helpful but blitz format teaches bad habits — balance with slow time controls.
  • Don't rely on engine analysis at home — your child won't develop pattern recognition.

Frequently asked
