What Badminton CCA is like in school

Badminton is a major Sports CCA in Singapore schools, competing in the National School Games. Played indoors on hall courts. Equipment-light compared to other sports — main investment is shoes.

Training rhythm

  • 2-3 sessions per week, 2 hours each — in the school hall.
  • NSG season Jan-Sep with division play-offs.
  • Most schools mix singles + doubles practice.

The school provides

  • Game-day jersey or polo (issued).
  • Shared training racquets for first 3-6 months for new joiners.
  • Shuttlecocks (the school's budget — usually unbranded for training).

What parents buy

  • Indoor badminton shoes (non-marking gum sole) — Yonex, Victor, or Li-Ning are standard.
  • Personal racquet (after Sec 1 — Yonex Nanoray Light or budget S$30-50 OK to start).
  • Overgrip 6-pack (replaceable, sweat-absorbent).
  • 1L water bottle + sweatband + microfibre towel.

Watch-outs

  • Don't rush to buy a S$200+ racquet at Sec 1 — kids' technique changes; what feels good now won't in Sec 3.
  • Gum sole only for indoor courts — outdoor sneakers will mark the floor and damage your child's ankles on the grip difference.
  • Tournament-grade shuttlecocks are pricey — wait for coach's instruction on whether parents need to buy.

Frequently asked

  • What NSG divisions does badminton have?
C Division (lower secondary), B Division (upper secondary), A Division (JC/Pre-U). Primary has separate inter-zone events.
  • Should we restring the school racquet?
No — schools restring their own. Personal racquets, yes: usually S$15-25 per restringing at any sports shop.
  • Are external training sessions worth it?
If your child shows competitive interest, yes — coaches at clubs (e.g. SBA-affiliated) take students further. Optional for casual CCA.
  • Can my child play if left-handed?
Yes — no equipment difference. Left-handed players have a strategic edge in doubles.
