Before you pack

What Primary 5 cohort camp is actually like

The P5 cohort camp is part of MOE's outdoor education programme. It's 3 days, 2 nights at a school-arranged site (most commonly NTUC Camp Resorts, Dairy Farm Lodge, or similar). Mostly outdoor, with indoor sleeping.

Programme rhythm

  • 3 days, 2 nights — most schools run it in Term 2 or Term 3.
  • Daily activities mix team-building games, low elements (rope course, abseiling), nature walks.
  • Bunk-style accommodation, dorms by sex.

Camp site provides

  • Beds, basic mess kit at meals, all meals.
  • Activity equipment (ropes, harnesses, etc.).
  • On-site medical and instructor supervision.

What parents buy

  • 3x T-shirts + 3x shorts (mix of school PE and casual is fine).
  • Pyjamas / sleepwear.
  • Toiletries, quick-dry towel, indoor slippers.
  • Headlamp / torchlight, insect repellent, water bottle.
  • Old sports shoes — they'll get muddy.

Watch-outs

  • Don't bring new shoes — guaranteed to come back filthy.
  • Label everything — name labels save 30 lost-property hunts.
  • Skip valuables: no phones, no smart watches, no money beyond a small note.

Frequently asked

  • Is P5 cohort camp compulsory?
Effectively yes — it's part of MOE's outdoor education curriculum. Medical exemptions are case-by-case via the school.
  • How much does it cost?
Usually under S$200, partially subsidised by MOE. Final amount is set by your school.
  • Can my child bring a phone for emergencies?
Usually no. The camp has emergency contact lines for parents. Bring a basic torchlight instead.
  • What if my child is afraid of heights?
Activities like abseiling are opt-in at most camps; nervous kids do a buddy version on lower elements.
